WGU is Affordable
WGU is a nonprofit online university. What does this mean for you? Very affordable tuition. In fact, WGU charges less than half what other traditional and reputable online universities typically charge. WGU is also approved to offer federal financial aid to those who qualify.
WGU is Competency-Based
WGU’s rigorous, competency-based approach is ideally suited to self-directed learners anxious to advance their education and careers efficiently. Unlike traditional, and even other online universities, WGU doesn’t award degrees based on seat time. Instead, you earn your degree by demonstrating your competence in your field. Through independent study and the use of learning resources, you master essential skills and knowledge necessary for success.
Our competency-based approach measures your progress through the successful completion of challenging assessments. Assessments take the form of essays, exams, research papers, and an assortment of projects that can be completed online. If you have existing competencies from prior work experience and education, you may be able to draw upon this knowledge to complete your assessments more quickly and accelerate your degree program.
WGU is Flexible and Supportive
If your schedule demands flexibility, WGU is for you. In most cases, you will access course material or study independently at the time and place you choose. You can progress at a pace that enables you to earn a college degree while managing your career, your family, and life’s other challenges. Our competency-based approach to education allows for extensive personalization of your program to fit around your busy schedule.
When you become a student, you’ll study under the guidance of a dedicated Student Mentor who will work with and support you from enrollment through graduation. Together with your mentor you’ll develop your personalized Degree Plan—a roadmap and schedule for successfully completing your program.
Student Success Profile
Ife Muyiwa-Ojo assumed that his position as a network/database engineer at an internet company in Atlanta, Georgia was steady and secure. When his company downsized and he lost his position, he realized it was time for a change and decided to pursue a career in healthcare.
“I talked to WGU. My advisor was wonderful and knowledgeable. We reviewed everything but found that some of the courses I had taken years ago weren’t transferable. We determined that I needed to complete 12 courses before I could begin my concentration.”
Ife used StraighterLine to earn the credits he needed for admission to WGU. “I really worked hard,” Ife says. “I devoted myself to studying full-time. I worked evenings and weekends. The courses were very in-depth and I had to read every textbook from cover to cover. I really learned.”
Ife completed 12 courses at StraighterLine and transferred to WGU. He recently began his 3rd term and is getting closer to graduation every day. Both WGU and StraighterLine programs are competency-based, which means dedicated students like Ife can accelerate their progress and earn a degree in less time, for less money. Ultimately, students are able to earn a degree faster and with far less debt than many of their peers who earn a degree at a traditional university.
